CRYSTAL OF THE MONTH FOR DECEMBER 2008
J E T
Jet, an oxygenated hydrocarbon, has a hardness of 0.5 to 2.5 and can be found all around the world. Also referred to as Witches' Amber, Jet is not an actual crystal, but more closely resembles a type fossilized wood, comparable to coal. The most highly sought after stones come from Tibet because of the soft, subtle energies they emanate, though some may be more attracted to the glossy Jet from Australia.
Its mystical and protective blackness draws in negative energy like a energy sponge, and like Amber, Jet transmutes the energy to become whole again. Because of its softness, Jet, along with Amber, became one of the first few stones used as talismans by the Neolithic people. This stone was also sacred to cultures worldwide; amongst them were the Druids, Ancient Germanic and Norwegian tribes , Ancient Eastern Scandinavians, and the natives of the United States. Amongst those civilizations were powerful Shamans who used Jet as an amulet protecting themselves from negative "spirits" before, after, and during rituals. Over time, these magickal groups discovered this powerful stone ally also protected them from dis-ease and illness and provided them with comfort during trying times. For this reason, Kings and Queens of antiquity carried or wore this stone on their person during the black plague. Because of its softness it later lost its popularity but is gaining more interest by crystal healers worldwide.
This coming month of Capricorn, one the most frigid months of the year, brings its ruler Saturn into play. So what exactly does this mean to us all? According to Hazel Dixon-Cooper, writer of Born on a Rotten Day writes, "Saturn is a ruler of hard knocks, and cold hard cash." And it couldn't be said better! Capricious Capricorn requires re-organization of anything financial and special attention to detail to prevent afflicting one's status image. In the process of stressing over a desk full of paperwork, Saturn spills depression, illness and fatigue. And though one must hustle to get the job done, it's important to curb away any excess negativity that could come our way. Thus Jet is the key to that will lead to healing and protection.
Jet has long been used for depression, anger, and jealousy, as well as an amulet of protection from negative thoughts or influences of others. The best Jet to obtain is from Tibet, which resonates with the Spiritual calming tones of the area helping one to loosen up those tense muscles that lead towards headaches and fatigue. For this reason, Jet is highly recommended by crystal healers for minor headaches and migraine sufferers. Because of its glossiness, Australian Jet is perfect for use in scrying for new Job Ventures or Prosperous Expansions, as Jet is also a protector in financial matters. It can be used to also protect one's financial assets while also grounding one's negative energy (especially to be considered as one balances the checkbook.) The Ancient Chinese revered this stone and would often place it in their wealth vaults to protect it from thieves. Though it's always best to be safer than sorry, it won't hurt if one places it in a Safe Deposit Box or personal safe at home. The Ancient Native American People also revered the stone and felt its connection to Akasha and to their ancestors. For those that are seeking their past and past lives, one can use the aid of Jet during past life recall. It was also believed that part of one's spirit is captured by the stone so it's imperative one pays special attention when clearing/cleansing the energy on this stone… nothing a good smudging won't take care of!
Whatever the Energy you seek this Month of Capricorn, fan away those Saturnine rings of gloom, negative energy, and illness, while fanning in prosperity, love, and healthy choices. May the protective, spiritual, healing energy of Jet aid each and every one of you! Blessed Be!
